In the Center Ring
The College of Veterinary Medicine has long co-sponsored a steer at the annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair.
This year was no different as CVM once again teamed up with the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. This year’s steer was “Magic,” owned by Claire Pellett of Atlantic, Iowa.
“It’s an incredible opportunity,” Pellett said. “I grew up watching the steer show and then my dad had the opportunity last year to judge, so to be able to show is a great opportunity.”
Pellett was joined on the arena floor by 23 other steers that participated in the 42nd annual event. Dr. Dan Grooms, the Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of Veterinary Medicine, was the celebrity showperson and led Magic around the arena.
Grooms wasn’t the only CVM faculty member to show. Dr. Megan Hindman, clinical assistant professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, was the celebrity showperson with “Jimmy,” a steer owned by Blayne Beaty of Russell, Iowa.
While Magic wasn’t judged to be one of the top steers in this year’s show, Jimmy and Hindman made it into the top five of the competition.
