Visiting (temporary) students generally come to the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine to participate in VM4 (senior student) rotations. These are veterinary students attending other veterinary colleges, and the credit or non-credit they receive as a visiting student is determined by their own university. The following is a brief outline (not comprehensive) of information visiting students need to receive. It is important that further information is provided by the hosting department with primary student responsibility, and facilitated by the CVM International Programs Office in the Office of the Dean for Academic and Student Affairs when international students are coming to the college.
Vaccinations
The college requires all student visitors working with animals to have proof of rabies vaccination. The CVM requires rabies (3 shot series) or proof of sufficient titer. Also required is proof of a current tetanus vaccination within the past 10 years.
Other vaccinations, such as mumps, measles, rubella, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough), a one-time vaccination, are recommended but not required by Iowa State University for non-enrolled students. Vaccines are available at the Theilen Health Center for a fee.
A copy of these records should be held in the office of the hosting department.
Safety
Students should read and be familiar with the ISU Veterinary College Student Handbook, especially regarding safety, biosecurity, and ethics.
The student will receive an electronic pdf of the VM4 Handbook.
Accommodations
All students and visitors to Iowa State University should make their requests for disability accommodations to the Office of Student Disability Resources (SDR) related to courses and education to assist in determining eligibility. In the cases where students/visitors contact the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine Associate Dean of Students Office or Veterinary Medicine staff and /or instructors regarding an accommodation request, please contact SDR to assist. If at all possible, this should be done before accommodations need to be made, since time is needed for approval and documentation. SDR will work with the student to complete Student Academic Accommodation Request forms (SAARs) to present to instructors.
Communications
Students should contact the departmental office of the department in which they are working for further knowledge of policies, procedures, available office and/or study space, assignments, lockers, clothing, supplies, building access, and other needed information. Your contact person will need to assist you in traveling to the ISU campus.
Students will need to receive an orientation regarding the electronic medical records program and patient confidentiality. Students should start at the beginning of block rotations in order to receive orientation for that block.
Students should complete the College of Veterinary Medicine Course Experience- Request by Visiting Student form or a similar form which will be signed by the instructors.
On arrival, students will notify the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and obtain a plastic-sleeved name badge.
University ID & Computer Use
On an as needed basis, students may be granted temporary computer use. The student will need to have an ISU Identification Card and number to be granted this access.
Students are required to know the ISU computer ethics code.
3.2. Password Security Users are responsible for the security of computer systems passwords, personal account passwords (e.g. Net-ID passwords) and personal identification numbers (PINs) and will be held accountable for any activities linked to their accounts. Users must follow established university standards for maintaining and managing passwords. 3.3. User Security Practices Users are required to be aware of and employ security practices established by the university and their colleges, departments or administrative offices to prevent unauthorized access to their computers. Security breaches can often be linked to the actions individuals take or fail to take when using information technology resources (e.g., leaving their computers logged into applications while away from their desks, storing written copies of passwords in obvious places, using insecure methods for transferring information).
Students may not copy or disseminate any college information obtained via computer access unless permission has been granted by the author or college.
Keys/Access
The department and mentor(s) are responsible for obtaining temporary key access and signing for the visiting student, as the responsible person for the access. This should be limited access with a specific external door (the designated student entrance) and will be terminated when the student leaves. Key requests are forwarded and approved via Ms. Karol Krumm.
Insurance
International students are required to have proof of health insurance.
Liability - Under Iowa Tort Law, students working on behalf of ISU and located at the Iowa State University are usually covered under Iowa Tort Law.

The above topics for orientation generally apply to visiting scholars and faculty as well. In those cases, the Faculty Host is responsible.
Clinical Year Education Program
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences administers the Clinical Year (“Visiting Scholars”) Program through individual memorandum of understanding agreements with Ross University, St. George's University, and St. Matthew's University and welcomes students from all of these veterinary schools.
