A Look Back at 2022
As 2022 comes to an end, here’s a look back at what happened last year in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
January
Studies since the start of the COVID pandemic have noted that pigs exposed to the coronavirus don’t show clinical signs of disease nor do they transmit to other animals. Dr. Luis Gimenez-Lirola and Rahul Nelli in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have uncovered important clues that shed light on why pigs don’t get sick, and the discovery could lead to better treatments for COVID-19 in humans.
February
Dr. Gregory Phillips, professor of veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine, has received funding from the 2022 Margaret B. Barry Cancer Research Program to explore bioengineering probiotics to destroy the types of tumors seen in cancer patients.
March
Dr. Paul Plummer, the Anderson Chair of Veterinary Medicine and professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, has been elected to the National Academies of Practice as a Distinguished Veterinary Science Fellow.
April
A state-of-the-art laparoscopy/arthroscopy tower will allow the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center’s Large Animal Hospital to further advance its already high-level care for equine athletes and food animal species patients.
May
Two College of Veterinary Medicine faculty members were awarded national honors this month. Dr. Qijing Zhang, a Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in Veterinary Medicine, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Dr. Suzanne Millman, professor of biomedical sciences and veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, was named the recipient of the American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2022 AVMA Humane Award.
June
Dr. William Hoefle and Judy Hoefle have established the Hoefle Professorship in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Karl Kraus, professor of veterinary clinical sciences, was named the first recipient of the named faculty position.
July
Three faculty members were named to administrative positions in the college. Dr. Paul Plummer, the Anderson Chair of Veterinary Medicine and professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, was appointed associate dean of research and graduate studies. Dr. Jessica Ward, the Phyllis M. Clark Professor in Veterinary Cardiology and associate professor of veterinary clinical sciences, was named the assistant dean for extramural student programs. Dr. Rachel Derscheid, associate professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, has been named the college’s Equity Advisor.
August
The College of Veterinary Medicine once again hosted the Faculty Exchange Program in African Veterinary Science. Eight African veterinary faculty scholars were embedded in the college through early December.
September
Recipients of the College Achievement Awards were presented during the college’s Fall Convocation.
October
The College of Veterinary Medicine began its year-long recognition of the graduation of Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson (’23). Activities included a celebration of Dr. Patterson’s birthday on October 10.
November
Six individuals were recognized with alumni awards by the College of Veterinary Medicine.
December
The College of Veterinary Medicine opened a 24/7 Food Pantry for the CVM community in The Commons.
