Blister Beetles Reported in Story, Boone Counties

August 22, 2023

There have been some recent reports of Blister Beetles in Boone and Story County. Blister beetles are present in Iowa each year, but ISU extension is concerned about potential increases in Blister Beetles this year. Please see the following link for further information on blister beetles.

Blister beetle infested hay (usually alfalfa) can cause health problems and death in horses and other livestock. If you see black, elongated beetles in hay bales, do not feed and toss the affected bale. Symptoms in horses include sores or blisters of the tongue and mouth, colic, fever, diarrhea, and sweating.
