Second-year ISU veterinary student Emily Meggers and seven veterinary students from UNL responded to a call for help from local practitioners in Bridgeport, Neb., to care for 208 mustangs, burros and mules that were rescued from the 3 Strikes ranch in Alliance, Neb. The UNL veterinary students included: VM1s-Maggie Peitzmeier, Whitney Sprout, Amanda Van Pelt and Laurel Wegener; VM2s-Johanna Fithian, Jordan Nickerson, and Robert Reid. The veterinary students, along with Dr. David Hardin, UNL, arrived in Bridgeport Friday night. On Saturday, the students administered vaccinations and dewormer medication; they also microchipped each horse and assisted with Coggins blood draws on 155 of 208 animals. Each horse received a body condition score, and was tagged and photographed for the sheriff’s evidence reports.“Working with these animals was an eye-opening experience to the veterinary community’s role in animal neglect cases,” Emily said.
